18th Century Copper Plated Bird Engraving by Buffon in Custom Faux Bamboo Frame (c. 1790)

HISTORY
The Count de Buffon was a notable French Naturalist from the 18th century, in fact he is universally thought to be the most important Naturalist of the era. He produced a large catalogue of the animals and birds known in his time, and even began to write about the possibility of evolution, which was very radical considering Darwin had not yet been born. He died in 1788 and left such a large amount of notes that it was 20 years before everything had been published. This bird print is one of a large English Language series published as plain copper engravings in the 1790's, where the bird's are given their English names. These are very old prints, more than 200 years and the condition is generally very good.
